Today I’ll be focusing on my favorite layered look – collared dresses and sweaters. There are so many things you can do with this look and I’ll be sharing my favorite ways to style this here.

I have been looking for a collared dress for months now and have even ordered several online just to ship them right back. The dresses I received were either the wrong fit, the wrong type of collar, or just for whatever reason did not work out. Then I realized that I have a plain black dress from Zara hanging in my closet that has the right type of neckline for a collared shirt and decided to try the two out together and voila – my perfect collared dress was actually already hanging in my closet, I just did not know it yet. I added some OTK boots to this dress and made the perfect going out fall/winter outfit.

My second favorite way to style this look is with a sweater and a button up. I own a number of Portofino tops from Express with all kinds of colors and patterns and adding something like that under a plain gray sweater instantly spices out your outfit and makes it a lot more fun. In the look below, I layered a polka dot Portofino top underneath a plain gray sweater and instantly made the top look less boring. I love layering solid colored sweaters with plaid shirt as well because a plaid collar always looks great on a neutral colored sweater. You can literally layer a gray sweater with any color (other than beige tones. I tend to not like to mix gray and tan/beige together). I also love how layering a black sweater with a white or light colored collar looks. Layering a black sweater with a white button down is definitely perfect if you are going for the preppy look but if you’re going for something else, a light colored button down with a pattern would be perfect.
