I like to change my skincare routine every season (much less dramatically in the spring and fall) to address the effects of the seasons on your skin. For example, the winter is a much dryer season with less time outside, so I use thick moisturizers whilst during the summer, the brightening creams and serums are more effective. Today, I’m going to talk about my summer skincare routine including the products that I use and with what frequency I use them.
For reference – I am 25 years old and I have normal skin. It can get a bit dry in the winter and a bit oily in the summer but those are rare occasions. So keep this in mind when reading my recommendations.
Since you should always start with a clean face, cleansing is naturally first. The top criteria for cleansers are those which feel light on the skin. The Glossier Milky Jelly cleanser and the H2O+ Beauty Elements Keep It Fresh cleanser are my all-time favorites, no matter the season . I usually use those at night, since these two are both big guns for taking off make up. I do not see the need of using them first thing in the morning, since, obviously, there’s no make up to take off. When it comes to washing my face in the morning, I stick to the Soap & Glory facial cleanser, although I’ll admit, I don’t use it every day. In the summer all I need is to wash my face with some water, followed by my Pixi Glow Tonic.
While in the winter, I use my Clinique Sonic brush pretty frequently (at least twice a week) to cleanse and exfoliate, in the summer I tend to barely use it at all. Why? Honestly, because I don’t want to wash and exfoliate away my tan. I like being tan in the summer, but if you prefer your natural tone (or have a sun allergy like one of my friends), brush away!
Speaking of being tan. While I am all for having a nice bronze glow in the summer, you should be very careful about making sure you have SPF in your skincare products. Yes, I know, you’re supposed to use SPF all year round, but I guess we all roll the dice on some things! In the summer, I use two main products for my SPF – Dr.Jart’s Ceramidin Day Tint and Cotz Flawless Complexion Tinted Moisturizer. The Ceramidin Day Tint is my favorite tinted moisturizer and replaces foundation for most occasions. It provides enough coverage that you don’t really need foundation, has SPF, so your skin looks absolutely flawless. It does come with a bit of a steep price tag but I think it’s completely worth it. The one downfall is that it only comes in one shade. I recommended this moisturizer to my pale friend, and it didn’t match her skin-tone but she did end up loving the Premium Beauty Balm that’s SPF 45, so that’s also another alternative. The Cotz tinted moisturizer also provides great SPF coverage and makes your skin look very dewy but does provide a bit less coverage than the Ceramidin Day Tint.
I retire my GlamGlow ThirstyMud mask for the summer, since you don’t need the intense hydration. I pivot to other masks such as the Fresh Rose Face mask (literally, rose petals in the mask) and the Farmacy Honey Potion mask. Both will leave your skin hydrated but also very radiant and healthy looking.
Summer calls for a healthy glow and my favorite moisturizer, Garnier Clearly Brighter, does just that! I received a sample from either a subscription box or a purchase from Ulta, and had to run out and get the full size because it’s that good. It smells really pleasant, and leaves your skin looking very radiant while not irritating or break out the skin at all. As an alternative, I am also still loyal to my Soap & Glory Daily Youth Moisturizer for the summer. This is because don’t like to use the same moisturizer every day so I tend to mix it up a bit.
There you have it for my favorite summer products and skincare routine. What are some summer time products that you guys recommend? There’s still plenty of summer left to check them out!
